Stats – Mood disorders are relatively common in adults, with depression and bipolar disorder being the most common. Approximately 7% of adults in the United States have depression, while about 2.8% have bipolar disorder.

Diagnosis – A mood disorder diagnosis typically involves a mental health professional evaluating an individual’s symptoms, medical and family history, and any potential contributing factors like substance use or medications. Fortunately, mood disorders are treatable — usually with a combination of medication and psychotherapy.

Around 21.4% of adults will experience a mood disorder at some point in their lives, and 45% of those with a mood disorder face severe impairment.
