About Emotional Dysregulation
Emotional dysregulation happens when there is an issue with how different parts of your brain communicate with each other. It can be related to other mental health conditions like depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and autism, and when severe, emotional dysregulation can disrupt your career, relationships, and life.
Symptoms of emotional dysregulation:
- Mood swings
- Impulsive behavior
- Mania or hypomania
- Losing your temper
- Difficulty managing your moods
- Feeling stuck or unable to make yourself feel better
- Easily frustrated by minor inconveniences
- Persistent irritability or anger
- Verbal outbursts
- Aggressive or even violent behavior
- Trouble maintaining friendships and relationships
Definition – Emotional dysregulation involves trouble controlling your emotions and how you act on them, according to The Cleveland Clinic. If you had a volume control button for your feelings, imagine that with emotional dysregulation your volume control doesn’t work like it should, making your emotions “louder” and harder to manage.
Stats – An estimated 5-10% of adults in the United States experience significant emotional dysregulation, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
Diagnosis – Emotional dysregulation is often the result of more than one condition, and it’s most common in those with mental health disorders, who are neurodivergent, or with damage to certain areas of their brain. Treatments usually consist of a mix of psychotherapy, medication, and ongoing support.
