About Depressive Disorders

Individuals with depression struggle with persistent feelings of loneliness, pessimism, and worthlessness that cause normal daily interactions with family and friends to seem daunting. Major depressive disorder, or clinical depression, is even more severe and can be life-threatening without depression treatment.

Definition – A serious mental illness in the form of a brain disorder, depression is more than just feeling “down in the dumps” or sad for a few days. Depressive disorders can significantly disrupt daily life, and without treatment, symptoms often worsen over time.

Causes There are a variety of causes of depression, including genetic, environmental, psychological, and biochemical factors. A person has an increased risk of depression if they have a family history or have experienced trauma, major life changes, stress, or a side effect to certain medications.
