About Psychodrama Therapy

Psychodrama may sound new to you, but it was first created in 1921 as a type of psychotherapy initially conceived as “deep group psychotherapy,” which was inspired by improvisation theater. The key aspect of psychodrama is the dramatization by participants of a series of events as if they were happening in the present.

How Does Psychodrama Work?

Psychodrama allows individuals to gain greater insight into their situation in order to enable them to cope better with their thoughts and feelings and increase their personal resources and strengths. Psychodrama offers a broad range of possibilities when applied to mental health treatment programs, and reports have been published of effective interventions.
The 5 Principal Elements of Psychodrama:

  1. Protagonist – This is someone from the group who acts out roles in different scenes that are linked to possible difficulties and/or personal potentialities.
  2.  Auxiliary egos – These qualified helpers play the role of co-therapists, directing the protagonist while at the same time acting as external observers of the scene being played out.
  3. Director – This person acts as both therapist and analyst, bearing responsibility for guiding the session and monitoring the progress of the process.
  4. Audience – Made up of the other members of the group, the audience may help by serving as a “sounding box,” amplifying or reinforcing the protagonist’s sensations.
  5. Stage – A specific space in which the scene takes place and is acted out, enabling the protagonist to represent their inner world and play out their dreams and fantasies.
